Black Point Marina - Fishing Report - 1/3/10 Empty Black Point Marina - Fishing Report - 1/3/10

Post by Admin Sun Jan 03, 2010 12:25 pm

So, I ran down to Black Point today just before dawn. It was in the upper 40's, and I was the only one there. I caught the tide wrong, it was the tail end of an outgoing tide. At the end of the channel, off to the right side of the bay, you could see hundreds of birds nailing groups of bait fish. If I had a boat it would have been on. However, down the channel along the trail, there was absolutely no activity and no strikes.

Black Point Marina - Fishing Report - 1/3/10 009-14

After walking the length of the path to the end, and working a Red/White MirroLure, I gave up on that stretch and headed back to the car. I drove around to the marina side, parked, and started working the rocks along that shore line. At first it was just as dead, after about 30 minutes a little Barracuda popped up, about 18" long, and was being aggressive. So, I was thinking cool, a little cuda fight would be nice on my light tackle. But to no avail, he stopped being active. However, he was the beginning of a flurry of activity. Namely big Tarpon started rolling and popping after some Mullet. It was very exciting to watch, they were within 10 yards of me, and I worked that school for like 2 hours. But between the MirroLure and a Crippled Herring lure and the live Mullet, the live Mullet was what they wanted. It was still nice to see the activity, and next time I will bring my Tarpon killer top water torpedo.
At this point the tide started coming in, and I can see the change in current. Then I noticed the birds working their way back up the channel, which means the schools of bait fish were headed back.. awesome, but I had to get back home and leave what I am sure would have been a prime time fishing event. Oh well, I will head back later this week and bring more tackle with me this time.

Maybe my new rods and reels will be in this week as well Very Happy
