Turkey Shoot with a 22??

I was looking to get into some hunting this year, and was unsure how I want to go about it. I was going to get a 12ga, and use both a smooth and rifled barrel for different aspects of hunting. But, I like the idea of carrying a nice light 22. At the same time, no one else in my family will eat game meat. So, this is all just for me. I was thinking small game like rabbit/turkey, nothing more.
So, what about a 22? Any opinions would be welcomed. I suppose I should make sure its okay to turkey hunt with a rifle as well.

The state said it's ok to use a 22, but recommend a shotgun.. lol. I want an 870 anyway.
