Record Number of Manatee Deaths Expected for '09
TALLAHASSEE, Florida More manatees have been found dead in Florida waters in 2009 than any previous year.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reported Friday that 419 manatee carcasses had been found in state waters as of Dec. 11. The preliminary data indicates that the total number of manatee deaths for 2009 has surpassed the highest number on record for a calendar year.
Totals for 2009 are expected to be available on Jan. 6.
Boaters watch your No Wake Zones to aid in the effort to reduce these numbers. Locally, at Black Point Marina, I have seen numerous boaters ignore the stretch of "No Wake: Manatee Area" right up until they get close to the Marine Patrol Station. It shouldn't be an effort to not get caught in No Wake Zones, but it should be an effort to help maintain the delicate balance that we are out there to enjoy.
